The title of my course this time is called New Testament Survey: General Epistles & Revelation. Its a dvd course, the instructor is Matthew McAffee. It has 23 sessions, so I'll cover 3 this week.

The first one for this week is on the John epistles. They are in agreement on authorship, that its the same one that wrote the gospel. He talks about how these are for encouragement and direction in staying true to the faith and helping recognizing anti-christs.

We hear a lot about "antichrist" in Christianity today. I have heard about some scholars saying that John was talking more about a "spirit of antichrist" than an individual. Did the instructor happen to mention anything about that?

The way I remember him describing it is more like an idea or way of living. So I guess it could be characterized as a spirit. I got the impression he was describing a belief.

I didnt come up with any words. One word that was discussed was "docetism". I didnt know what it was but the instructor explained after he said it. He said it meant "to seem". It was a belief that people thought Jesus was a phantom or pure spirit. When I looked it up on Wikipedia, it was exactly what he described it as.
