The title of my course is Old Testament Survey: Poetry and Prophecy. The instructor is Dr. Garnett Reid. I'll watch 4 classes this week.
It should be on a different book. The last class seemed to end with Job.

This class starts with Psalms, the insrtuctor says he thinks that if some had to pick a favorite OT book, this would probobly get the most votes. I agree with him, I would probobly choose it mainly on the reason that I love music and some much comes from them. What would be one of yours?

He brings up some interesting points about Psalms. One was that there are no chapters in Psalms. I guess I never thought of them that way. Another one was that Ps. 90, the one thats attributed to Moses, is probobly the oldest Psalm.

Some other thing discussed is that David is attributed to writing half of them. The book is divided into 5 books, I had noticed that but hadn't give it much thought. He says no one knows the real reason but says that he believes the theory of them being like editions. He talks of one theory where the Jews believe its tied somehow to the Torah. Meaning each book of the Psalms is correlated to the 5 books of the Torah.

He also says that the Psalms can be related to most all of the OT. I do like how you can read about David in the history part of the Bible, and you get a "commentary" on some the situations thru the Pslams. I had posted before from the Yancey book where he talks about how you perceive David to handle a situation one way in the historical books, but find that he felt something different from The Psalms.

The instructor brings up the categories of the psalms. Lament,Praise,Wisdom, Royal, and Prophetic. They do seem to cover all the situations you will face. Its a reminder that God knows.

I really like Psalm 46. I feel that is a word we can go to when we are down. I really like the author talks about the bad things that could happen, and how God is still for us in this struggle.

The last DVD starts on Proverbs. He says the word "proverb" means to be like. I didn't know that, but it makes sense. He also talks about how parables are similiar.

I also thought as I was listening that Proverbs allow us to reflect our lives to what God wants us to do. He gives an example of our "vertical" lives (spiritual), and "horizontal" lives (earthly). He states that Proverbs helps us in the horizontal lives. It helps in both, but mainly deals with living as humans, and with others. I thought it was a good analogy.

He gives a list of character traits that it deals with which I thought was good. Here are some:Honesty, Hard Work, Compassion, sobriety, thrift, humility, perserverence, contentment, reliability, joy, kindness, forgiving, monogamy, submission, honor, courage, Patience, self control, loyalty, fairness.

Another thing he says is that Proverbs (and Parables) teach us by using our natural surroundings. This is what to me makes it a truth that you have to deal with. We are people who want to "see" or "touch" things. Its to me what talks about in Romans, when he mentions that we have no excuse. Gods truth is all around us

Psa 100:1 A psalm. For giving thanks. Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
Psa 100:2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Psa 100:4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.
Psa 100:5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. This Psalm I try to keep in mind when I go to church. It reminds me to go with praise in mind. WHiche leads me to expect something.

I think that another theme in Proverbs is realizing that wisdom comes from God. We all like to think that we are wise, but true wisdom is a relationship with God. I like that. I may not be very smart, but through Him I am wise.

Tyler, since you have been through these DVD's, what question would you like Sean to deal with?

Tyler Owens said...

I feel like the Psalms are a great collection of different feelings and thoughts. I sometimes wonder what I would say if I wrote a psalm about my life. Do you guys have any thoughts about it?

Writing a psalm on my life: intriguing thought. I'm not sure what direction I would go, but I guess if I went back, I could possibly have written about feelings of discouragement. Then there were exciting times of unusual provision. I could have written a psalm of praise or thanksgibing.
