The title of my course is Pastoral Ministry. The instructor is Mr. Terry Forrest. I will be watching three DVDs this week. The title of my book is PASTORAL MINISTRY. The author is John MacArthur. I will be reading three chapters this week.

4. Approaching Pastoral Ministry Scripturally

5. The Character of a Pastor

6. The Call to Pastoral Ministry

The DVD was about the character of a preacher. He went into great detail about not drinking alcohol. I agreed with everything he said. He also talked about the fact that we need to tell people who want to join our churches about it in detail and explain to them why it is important.

The next DVD was about how we need to act. We need to have authority over our homes. The minister must not be a novice and have a good report among people. He also said to not be the kind of man who gets angry easily. I think that is very important, especially in ministry.

These are some things I didnt think much about when I was first saved. Meaning the things pertaining to a covenant with a church. Does your course go into much depth on this subject?

Does the author go into much practical detail when it comes to recognizing "the call" to ministry?

It has not said anything about the church covenant yet. I do think it is important to know what the church that you are a part of believes. As for Bro. Randy's question, he talks about knowing in your heart and surrounding yourselves with good Godly men who can help you realize your call.

Tyler I have to agree with your instructor on the fact that we should discuss what will be expected of them when they join the church. Many people I believe join the church thinking they will get something out of it and are not willing to give, such as tithes and offerings, use of their gifts, or giving up that bad habit that makes them a bad witness, I don't mean to sound judgmental but I think they should be told about being a representative of the church and to Jesus as well as to God. Is this what your instuctor is teaching on? God Bless!!

On my experience in joining the church, my family joined back in the 80's and I didnt join with them, I can remember why but my guess is because I wasnt saved or baptized. Anyway, back in '01 when I was saved and baptized my pastor asked me about joining and explained to me the covenant. I had seen others join but I was so elated in being saved and experiencing it that looking back I didnt really think that deeply about the covenant, I just said yes. It wasnt until later that I really thought about what exactly our church stood for. I just wanted what the other people had and when I found the Source, that was all that mattered. I dont know if this post really is making any points, its just my experience with joining the church, maybe to see if I'm the only person who felt this way.

The DVD that I watched was about personal holiness. The instructor talked about how we act, dress, and talk. We should not even talk about anything that may come across as un-christian like. We need to dress respectively as well. A preacher is not to be rude or hateful to anyone.

I don't see anything wrong with having a class about our church covenant. I think that it would be a great benefit to the people wanting to join. They may have questions about some of the conditions in our covenant and that would be the proper time to ask. I also encourage people to talk with the pastor first. This could help clear up any misunderstanding.
